Disaster ResponseSadly, but inevitably, tragedies happen. Natural disasters and cruelty willfully inflicted are unfortunate aspects of our human existence. Thankfully, and repeatedly, the good people of the Diocese of Belleville have risen above these tragedies to be visible examples of God's love and compassion in times of need. From the great floods, to 9-11, and every day in between and since, the Catholic parishes, schools and communities of Southern Illinois stand in solidarity with victims and survivors who see their lives changed in a moment. Nationally, countless caring Catholics and others have donated over 29 million dollars to Catholic Charities USA in response to the September 11 tragedies. A number of people, families and children here in the Diocese of Belleville have made great sacrifices to contribute. At least $26,801,003 of the $29 million will be allocated directly to the following.
Donations have come from over 100 diocese, 1400 parishes and 28,000 individuals. We thank the good people of the Diocese of Belleville who have played a part in serving the larger Church. You will note that over 92% of all money collected will go directly to survivors, victims' families and related services. Your generosity is appreciated and valued. Please remember the continued benefit of your prayers as well. With most disasters, immediate response groups come in for the first 30 days. Catholic Charities is then entrusted with follow up that that can last months and years after the physical scars may heal. For example, Catholic Charities in Oklahoma City is still actively involved in ministering to survivors and victims' families from the 1995 federal building bombing. Again, please remember the ongoing need for prayer. In the event of future incidents, check this page for updated information on relief efforts and ways that concerned persons and families can assist. Thank you for caring.
