Daystar Community Programs

Daystar Community Programs seeks to be a visible expression of God's love by responding to the human needs of the people of Southern Illinois and by promoting a just and caring community for people of all backgrounds.

We exist to improve the quality of life-both spiritually and materially-in the community of the City of Cairo and in the counties of Alexander and Pulaski. Our poor, unemployed, unengaged, elderly, migrants, destitute, etc. need assistance with their most basic needs: clothes, food, housing, utilities, transportation, health care, etc.

We believe that God is caring; that we are called to minister as Jesus did; that we are required to respect the personal dignity, options and choices of those we help, and that we must be willing to serve their efforts of self determination, preservation and sufficiency.

Our Primary Services And Activities

• Madeline's Mart, a thrift store to provide clothing, shoes, books and household items at nominal prices. Sometimes items are given away to those in great need.
• A food pantry, stocked by government commodities, parish and other organizations' donations, and weekly supplies of frozen sandwiches.
• Our soup kitchen operates 4 days a week and serves as many as 160 meals a day.
• People receive emergency financial assistance to cover rent, utilities, medicine, transportation, and other needs.
• We also visit the needy in their homes, offering assistance, advocacy, friendship.
• We collect and distribute hundreds of holiday dinners, gift baskets, toys, etc.
• Church and community groups stay with us for days or a week at a time to pitch in around town with home improvement, rehab and other beautification projects.
